Some of today's fashion styles look better on teens than any other age group: what to buy and what to transform from your own wardrobe.

Editor's Choice

Teens have an edge in fashion: They can follow the styles as much or as little as they want without looking ridiculous. For this age group, experimenting with fashion is a form of self expression. An important key to remember is don't take fashion too seriously and have fun with it.

Fashion Trends to Shop For

Teenagers can wear the latest styles in a big way without it dating them. A skirt or shirt with ruffles all over looks age appropriate on a youthful girl. Clothing embellished with glitter or a shirt with a bejeweled neckline works best on the teen set. Pair a ruffled or glittery shirt with a pair of skinny pants, something not many people over 20 can get away with. Short skirts are another item that work best on youth, but with any clothing item, make sure it does not cross the line of decency. When wearing a short skirt, flat-heeled shoes are the more appropriate choice.

It's okay to borrow from clothing areas outside the girls' teen department. Just don't choose clothes that are too baggy or ill-fitting. Many of the sports or graphic t-shirts on the clearance rack of the guys' department are small sizes, which is a great steal for girls. Suspenders and ties are a fun way to add a masculine touch to a feminine outift. And in the winter, nothing looks cuter than a two braided pigtails poking out from under a man's brimmed rib-knit hat like those found at Old Navy.

Styles to Create from Your Own Closet

There are many styles that, with a little bit of creativity or home-ec knowledge, can come straight from what you already own. You don't have to buy jeans that are embellished or torn when you have your own. Use sand paper to wear through spots in the knees or thighs, or buy a craft kit to easily embellish jeans and personalize them with your initials. You can also find fabric paint at craft stores to decorate jeans or t-shirts. Use the sewing skills you learned in home ec class to shorten a hem line or transform sleeves into three-quarters length.

A long sweater, even one borrowed from a parent, can look fashionable when cinched at the waist with two skinny belts. Get an unexpected look by wearing a dressy skirt and top in shiny, feminine fabrics such as satin, but make it casual by pairing the ensemble with a denim jacket.

It is possible to keep in touch with the fashions and still keep your edge. You can wear a plaid skirt or a shirt cinched at the waist with ties; just choose your signature color for every piece, whether that be black, pink or green. Wear a long-sleeve t-shirt with a political message under a puffy vest.

When choosing great teen fashion, remember to mix it up, go big on style, and work with what you already own.
